“Crisis to Opportunities through Low-carbon Transition”

There is no doubt that we are in a climate crisis. Alarming data from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reveals that 2023 has been officially declared the hottest year on record, with global temperatures surpassing the pre-industrial level by a concerning 1.48 degrees Celsius. This figure places us dangerously close to the critical threshold set by the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

In response to the urgency, the UN COP28 pledged to triple the renewable energy capacity by 2030 and transition away from fossil fuels. This could pave the way for a greener and more sustainable future. To achieve its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, Hong Kong must urgently reduce carbon emissions through areas such as improving energy efficiency, increasing the use of renewable energy and adopting circular economy practices. However, its realisation requires proactive action and adequate resources from corporations and organisations across sectors to transform this crisis into opportunities.
