Management and maintenance of solar energy system is essential to enhance its efficiency

Hong Kong has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, and the development of solar energy is crucial to reaching this goal. However, to ensure the continuous high efficiency operation of the system, proper management and maintenance are indispensable. There are many cases in society where the lack of management and maintenance leads to a significant reduction in the effectiveness of solar energy systems, and even cases of wastage.

In light of this, CarbonCare InnoLab and Community Green Academy jointly organised a webinar titled “Solar System Management: Hong Kong Experience and Future Prospects” on 5 March 2025. Representatives from different sectors were invited to analyse the importance of proper management and maintenance of solar energy systems in response to climate change, as well as to delve into the current situation and challenges facing Hong Kong in this regard, and how various sectors of society can support the development of the solar energy industry.

Ms. Ivy Leung, Executive Director of CarbonCare InnoLab, first introduced the goals of the SolarCare Programme under the organisation and its contribution to carbon reduction. She pointed out that improper management of solar energy systems can affect the system’s lifespan, efficiency, and returns under the "Feed-in Tariff" scheme. Mr. Ng Ka-yin, Senior Camp Manager of Hong Kong Playground Association, shared methods of dealing with issues such as tree leaves or dirt covering solar energy systems, or water accumulation below the system, and highlighted the importance of monitoring electricity bills and other knowledge for managing solar energy systems. Mr. Joe Lee, Sustainability and Safety Manager of Hong Yip Service Company Ltd, shared insights from a property management perspective on the protective measures needed before a typhoon strikes and safety management for staff working at heights. Mr. KK Lo, Course Training Manager at the Community Green Academy, emphasised the need for talent training to keep pace with the rapid development of the solar energy industry, attracting the younger generation to enter the field and providing professional knowledge and skills for those who need to manage solar energy systems at work.

This webinar served as a platform for discussion, aiming to promote more cross-sector collaboration in building a lower-carbon environment in the future.
