The Third Session of the 4th Climate Advocacy Training for Youth (CATY)

The third session of the course is themed on “Climate Change and International Youth Movement”, and was successfully held on 20 May 2023. It gave students an understanding of the history and development of international climate conventions and conferences, as well as the role and involvement of young people in the arena.

We are honoured to have the Executive Director of Deloitte CarbonCare Asia, Mr. John Sayer, to share his personal experience and insights in taking part in international climate conventions. Starting from a background of the Paris Agreement and Glasgow Climate Pact, John walked us through the major concerns that were raised from COP 27 and bringing forth to COP 28. After that, we had Ryan Yip, an alumnus from CATY cohort 2 as well as COP 27 delegate, to share with us on youth participation in UNFCCC. Ryan introduced the structure and mechanism of UN YOUNGO, the volunteer-based global climate youth network. He shared his experience participating in COP as a youth delegate and joining in the workforce of YOUNGO. Both of their sharings provided students with fresh perspectives on the international arena of climate-related issues.

In the second half of the lesson, we had online sharings from international youth activists from two different countries. They were (1) Ji-Yun from South Korea, member of Green Environment Youth Korea (GEYK); (2) Teddy Taylor from Liberia, Focal Point of National ACE (Action for Climate Empowerment). Last but not least, we had a video sharing from Lance Lau who is now a climate activist in the UK. They shared the threats of climate crisis in their regions, and actions they are doing to promote a just and targeted climate movement. Students also reflected that these sharings are important to strengthening global understanding and youth solidarity.

CCIL is thrilled to witness students interacting with experienced climate activists and being encouraged in the process. We believe this will be a good start to their international climate engagements.
