What is Climate Justice?
Climate justice refers to the fair and equitable distribution of the costs and benefits of climate change mitigation and adaptation, with a particular focus on addressing the disproportionate impacts on marginalised communities and vulnerable groups.
Climate change in Hong Kong leads to social problems, especially for marginalised communities and vulnerable groups, highlighting the unequal impacts of climate change and the lack of support for adaptation. Climate justice aims to address these issues by promoting inclusive and participatory approaches, empowering affected communities, and advocating for systemic change towards a fair and sustainable future.
Why do I care?
Climate justice emphasises the fair distribution of the costs and benefits of climate change mitigation and adaptation. It recognises that the impacts of climate change disproportionately affect vulnerable communities, including marginalized groups, indigenous peoples, and developing countries. Climate justice seeks to address these inequalities and ensure that those who have contributed the least to climate change are not disproportionately burdened by its consequences. Climate change threatens fundamental human rights such as the right to life, health, food, water, and housing. By addressing climate justice, we uphold the principles of human rights and work towards creating a more equitable and just society where everyone can enjoy these basic rights.
Caring about climate justice stems from our deep moral responsibility to safeguard the planet and its inhabitants. It is our duty to ensure that future generations inherit a livable world and that we rectify the damage caused by our actions. By actively engaging in climate justice, we showcase our unwavering commitment to upholding ethical values and prioritizing the well-being of all individuals.
