Wind Turbine Turns Traffic into Renewable Energy

Writer: Sing

A recent advanced technology in Turkey made use of the dynamic of every city by generating energy from daily traffics.

The wind turbine system, known commonly as ENLIL, is yet another simple, innovative device proved to be efficient in generating renewable energy. Not only does the vertical axis device generates power by capturing the wind from unusual places, but it also generates energy from vehicles speeding through highway, especially large vehicles such as buses and trucks. These wind turbines can be easily found as they are small devices that fit to install in unsuitable sites for traditional turbines, such as highways, or high-rise residences.

However, that’s not the only function it has! Not only does the device utilise highway traffics, but it also features solar panels on the side of the wind turbine, absorbing solar energy through solar radiation during the day, and take measurements of humidity, wind force and carbon dioxide level 24/7. All these data are accessible to the public via a mobile app. Even more impressively, the system can be turned into an earthquake monitoring station, safeguarding the safety of nearby residents and detect potential earthquakes. How great is that?

The technology, first launched in 2017, is created by Deveci Tech and within the scope of the ENLIL project. The project gained supports from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) and is paving pathway into implementing more Wind Turbines to other major carriageways while hoping to normalize the device throughout the whole country in the near future.
