Established in 2001, Gideon Youth Military Training School is the first local military training school in Hong Kong. It aims to help youth explore their lives and learn about themselves through a combination of field training and with the spirit of Christianity so as to develop a good character and conduct, and to cultivate a harmonious relationship with ones’ family and the others.

The military training school is located on the small island of Yim Tin Tsai in Sai Kung. The island is one of the few Hakka villages rich in Catholic trait in Hong Kong, with a history of nearly 300 years. With its ecological features of salt pans, mangroves and various species of wild trees, the island is a great place to learn about the history and to experience nature.

We built traditional solar photovoltaic(PV) panels on the oblique roof of Gideon and bifacial solar photovoltaic(PV) panels on the large canopy on the open space in front of the school. We have installed a total of 85 solar photovoltaic(PV) panels there, with a system capacity of 138.51 kW and the power generated in the first year was 20,150 kWh.

The backside of the bifacial PV panels on the large canopy is transparent and allows sunlight to penetrate. There are also additional solar cells on the backside of each PV panel. When sunlight passes through the PV panels, it is refracted upon encountering the roof floor. With the remaining sunlight, the solar cells on the backside of the PV panel can increase the electrical power of the PV system.

In addition to generating electricity, the PV panels also help to lower the temperature under the canopy, making it more comfortable for guests at school events.

The bifacial PV panels on the large canopy help lower the temperature underneath.

Here is the meter room where the meters show the power generated by Gideon’s solar systems.

Gideon presented a Certificate of Appreciation to the representative of CarbonCare InnoLab.
