Established in 1933, Hong Kong Playground Association is a long-time non-governmental organization providing social services to children and young people in Hong Kong. Through the provision of diversified and pertinent services and facilities, it is devoted to nurturing the healthy mind and spirits of young people, for them to become the future pillars of Hong Kong.

The Jockey Club Silvermine Bay Camp in Mui Wo is the first camp under Hong Kong Playground Association. Opened in 1952, the camp provides recreation and environmental education services for organisations. At the 60s, along with the development in social service, the camp strengthened its recreational activities for young people. Starting from the 90s, the camp extended its target groups from students to churches, universities, non-governmental organisations and private groups, the camp activities also became more multi-dimensional.

The Silvermine Bay Camp had a large-scale reconstruction work 2011. The new camp is 2568 m2 in size, offering accommodation for 180 people in total. There are various environmental facilities in the camp, which include green rooftops, eco-park and paths, also new educational and recreational facilities, including multi-function halls, multi-media rooms, environmental education corridors, an archery range, rope course, etc.

We have installed 240 solar photovoltaic(PV) panels on the rooftop of 5 of the camp buildings, with a system capacity of 94.8 kW and the power generation in the first year was 89,700 kWh.

The campsite possessed a small environmental facility early on, and the installation of solar PV systems give HKPA a large-scale facility for educational purposes. Moreover, the systems have opened up opportunities for them to collaborate with other organisations in terms of environmental aspects.

Apart from the solar panels, we have also installed 3 solar loungers on the rooftop of Block B, allowing visitors to enjoy the comfort under their solar canopies and the beautiful view of sunset. The lounger is like a house in appearance, with a solar-powered air-purifying glass canopy the same colour as the lounger mounted on the oblique roof. The canopy uses nanometer thin-film photovoltaic modules that is capable of reducing PM2.5 fine inhalant particles in the air, generating power constantly in dim, hot and humid conditions. They could also resist weathering. The canopy also works as a partial shading, which helps to lower the temperature. Besides, it is made with waste materials, 90% of which can be recycled.

The solar loungers are very popular and become one of the highlights of the Camp.

These PV panels can be seen at several locations in the campsite.

The installation of the PV system has opened up opportunities for HKPA to work with other organisations in terms of environmental aspect.
