Scouting originated in the United Kingdom. Robert Baden-Powell, a British Army officer, drew upon his experience in training the army to develop a completely new training method that aimed to cultivate a sense of responsibility, independence, and idealism in young people. In 1908, he published the book "Scouting for Boys," which became a training manual for many organisations. In 1910, the first Scout Rally was held at the Crystal Palace in London, where a number of girls attended. Recognising this, Baden-Powell invited his sister, Agnes Baden-Powell, to lead these girls and named them "Girl Guides." In 1910, the Girl Guides were officially established.
The first Girl Guides unit in Hong Kong was formed in the Victoria British School in 1916, and the Hong Kong Girl Guides Association (HKGGA), the Hong Kong Branch was registered in 1919. It is currently the largest female youth organisation in Hong Kong, representing one of the 153 Member Organisations of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.
Their vision is to be the leading international youth organisation in Hong Kong for the personal development and leadership training for girls and young women. Their mission is to enable girls and young women to develop their fullest potential as responsible global citizens.
HKGGA offers a wide range of training programmes and activities designed to meet the needs and interests of today's girls and young women and aims to train and equip Girl Guides with knowledge, techniques and attitudes necessary for their personal growth and leadership development.
HKGGA has multiple campsites and centres, including Jockey Club Beas River Lodge and Pok Hong Campsite. Jockey Club Yuen Long Recreation Centre, located in Ping Shan is one of them. It was officially opened after redevelopment in 1983. The campsite is a two-story building with outdoor areas and it can accommodate a maximum of 75 people for overnight camping, while day camps or evening camps can accommodate up to 100 people. The main facilities at the campsite include dormitories, a hall, activity rooms, a kitchen, a basketball court, soccer machines, table tennis tables, and an outdoor event space (suitable for barbecues).
